I just recently bought a new camera and had to bring it with me when Andrew and I went on our semi-annual hike. This was taken the day after our first Winter storm, and even though we only got sleet and freezing rain in NYC, it is clear nothing but the white stuff fell on the Minnewaska State Preserve. This week, we introduce new POPstitute Mallory, and welcome the return of Broadway POPstitute, Erin. Together, we finish off the preview of the new fall TV season, Erin gives us a preview of all the new fall Broadway plays opening soon, and we test out the new ACTOR game…a supplement to the movie game which shall forever be a tiebreaker from now on.

March and Chant

My apologies to Annie Lennox.

Sometimes the most idiotic things make us happy (while under the influence). Marching and Chanting is one of those things.

A little history… For years people would March and Chant separately without ever considering doing them together. One fine day on a boat somewhere in the Carribbean, Jeana Ricci Gelston-Briggs brought them together. Like getting chocolate in her peanut butter, the two acts just seemed to go together. Since then, no one can really remember a time when the two weren’t done simultaneously.

The ritualistic dance has since swept the Northeast, and, as this video shows, is starting to catch on in Latin America (more specifically, Costa Rica). I can only hope that the rest of the World will see this video and revel in the joy of Marching and Chanting.

The Garcia Wedding

So, yet again, its been a while since I last posted. The past few months have been full of surprises, but I finally had the time on a lazy Sunday to put together a new episode of everyone’s favorite online series. If this were an episode of “Friends” , it would be titled “The One Where Everyone Dances…Everyone”

Veronica Mars. That’s who you can blame for the time its taking me to finish new episodes. I fully admit I watch entirely too much television for my own good, but don’t blame Lost, Heroes, Family Guy, 30 Rock, South Park, The Daily Show, or The Office. Its that damn hot little blonde detective that puts me in a guilty pleasure trance when I really should be working on the Ecuador Chronicles. With that said, I also have to admit I put a lot of time in creating all the elements that make up this one, including a voice over. Until next time I’ll just put the rest of the Season 2 DVDs away until I have to render Episode 3. I hope that makes you happy Mr. Ferranti.

I know it has been a long time since you last heard from your friendly neighborhood pop culture guru. A little over a month in fact. I had to clear a few obstacles, including a long overdue wedding video and a broken camera, before I started posting again.

Yes, thats right, even though I made it back from Ecuador OK, my trusty Sony Handycam is a little worn out. (Christmas is coming soon…Hint, Hint my loyal Houleigans) No need to worry though, I have all of the Ecuador footage digitized and ready to go.

So here it is, the first in series of video travel logs in which I hope to educate and entertain the masses. Please enjoy, leave a comment, and tell a friend. The Tungurahua Volcano Eruption

On August 15th 2006, Andrew & Stephanie Garcia’s Wedding Party woke up at dawn and took a bus to El Pailón del Diablo, a spectacular waterfall just on the edge of where the Andes and Amazon meet. Along the way I swithced between filming and napping (cause we woke up at dawn). Sometime around 10 AM, the tour bus pulls to the side of the road and people start to spill out in a frenzy. Only half awake, I groggily grab my camera and follow suit. In retrospect, I wish I was more alert to what was going on in front of me, because it turns out I was witness to the beginning of the most violent volcano eruptions in this region’s recent history. In less than 48 hours from the time this piece of video was shot, Tungurahua blew its top.

After we a filed back into bus, we just move a little further up the road to our first scheduled stop. The following is just a taste of what we did that day…

Its hot. Really hot. Its fry an egg on the hood of your car hot. Supposedly the temp went to 98 today, but the heat index went to 108. That’s hot. You know what else is hot? Another song from Marni & Melissa. This time its the John Denver classic “Country Roads”...with a little something lyrically extra. Even hotter? My new bug in the lower right corner. OK, its not hot. Just kinda cool.

Growing Up Is Easy to Do

So it seems that Kevin Smith and Ed Burns are trying to tell all Gen Xers to grow up through their new movies. I don’t see how Clerks II and The Groomsmen are any more mature than the films these guys were putting out 10 years ago. How bout practicing what you preach, boys?
Who am I kidding? I’m seeing both of these movies.

In other maturing news, Avril Lavigne got hitched to that guy from Sum 41. His name is Deryck with a “y”. That is sooooo sk8r boi!!!
Seriously, I’m setting the under/over at 14 months. Any takers?

Lastly, I’ve been getting obsessed with LOST again, and found all of Rachel Blake’s Vodcasts on YouTube. I wish I had the time and know how to hack her website, because the video posts are kinda lame. Damon and Carlton, please don’t let the thrid season suck.

Syd Barrett, co-founder of Pink Floyd, has passed away. He was a fascinating individual who suffered mental instability due to LSD, and left the band just a few short years before Floyd’s biggest release, “Dark Side of the Moon.” Later, Pink Floyd would use Barrett’s breakdown as musical fodder in albums such as “Wish You Here” and “The Wall”. Here’s to you, you crazy diamond.

Summer Movie Reviews

I’ve had a few requests over the past few months for my thoughts on the Summer Movies that I put on my Must See List in May. Sorry everyone, but I’ve been a little underwhelmed by my own picks that I haven’t been that inspired to write about them. I did write a brief review of Mission Impossible 3 on a Myspace Blog

Anyway, I’ve been spending too much time working on Wedding and Resume DVDs to have any time to write any reviews…so, here we go:

The DaVinci Code

My biggest beef with the film is the way they handled the works of art that were important to the story…namely every DaVinci piece. In the book, one had to use whatever limited knowledge of the paintings mentioned you had to understand what Robert Langdon would wax philosophical about. I thought for sure there would be detailed imagery of the works to make the mythology seem even more real, but alas there wasn’t. Just a few shots here and there as Tom Hanks spat out Langdon’s lines.
Other than that, I rather liked the film and thought it moved along pretty well. But, if you read the book, you saw the movie…nothing new or interesting at all to make it any more compelling. B-

X-Men: The Last Stand

The first scene opens on a young Professor X and Magneto while they were still friends as they visit a really young Jean Grey. This was about the only great moment of the movie. Let’s face it, Brett Ratner rushed this movie in order to make it’s release date, and you can tell. This is an X-Men movie that featured fan favorite Phoenix, an interesting plot about a cure, and a whole mess of new mutants, all crammed into less than 90 minutes. If you’re going to introduce that much into a movie, spend some time on it. Obviously Brett Ratner saw Bryan Singer’s films and tried to recreate his style. Nevertheless, Ratner forgot about the weight of the emotion Singer was able to bring out in the characters, whereas he just wanted to get to the action. The action is great, fantastic even, but without the story and character development, the action is pointless. It was nice to see Iceman finally”ice-up”, even it was only for a second. B

The Lake House

This wasn’t on my list, but I secretly wanted to see it. When a friend asked me if I wanted to see it, I was there. This is a perfect light Saturday matinee. Don’t let the ridiculous plot bother you…It’s beautifully shot, well acted, and surprisingly not predictable. Sure, it is essentially about a romantic magic time-traveling mailbox…but why can’t that be any fun? Just leave your damn suspension of disbelief at the door and enjoy. B-

Superman Returns

My feelings on this movie can be summed up in one undefinable sound: Meh. When the opening credits began and the theme song started up, I got a chill…The airplane sequence almost made me cry…But, the rest of the movie just left me kind of bored. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was comical, but not very villainous. Same with Parker Posey. I’m actually fine with Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, but lets see her actually get bruised or bleed once in a while. After all she goes through, you’d think she was “Super” herself. Brandon Routh was just fine as Supes, but I would have liked to see some kind of chemistry with Lex Luthor. There was nothing!! They barely shared screen time. For the sequel, they need a new villain… the “criminal mastermind” of Lex just doesn’t do it for me. He just comes off so bumbling, that it doesn’t necessarily take a Superman to foil him. I firmly believe a hero is only as good as the villain is bad. So, lets see Brainiac, Mr. Mxyzptlk, or Bizzaro enter the picture. B

Strangers With Candy

Hysterically perfect. Jerri Blank is still in ripe form. If you’re not already a fan of the show, I don’t think this movie is going to convert you. Die hard fans, however, are going to love every second. Everything great about the show is translated to the big screen effortlessly including the attention to detailed sets. There are so many sight gags, that a second viewing is necessary to catch them all. There was a little recasting (Jerri’s Dad and Brother are different…Orlando is replaced by a whole new character), but since most of the original cast is there, you don’t even notice. I loved this movie and can’t wait to see it again…and again. A
